Layman no more - Mass Call to the Bar
It has been a long and wild ride, but we have reached the first milestone.
I have the honour of addressing you as an Advocate and Solicitor, of the bar of Singapore. Some 200 of us attended the mass call this morning and were officially admitted as members of the bar. A representative each of the Attorney-General's Chambers and the Law Society affirmed that they had no objection to our admission and we proceeded to don court robes and swear an oath. This is what the court robe looks like, in a picture taken just outside the hall:
Later we had a photo fest all around the ceremony hall, and in the new and old buildings of the Supreme Court. Here are some taken in the grounds of the hall:

It is tradition to take a photo in court robes on the steps of the old Supreme Court after newly getting called. Note the cheerfully blazing late morning sun. We were kept exceptionally snug and warm in robes designed to withstand a chilly day in England (on top of a shirt and jacket inside).
Knock and it shall be opened unto you - a recently admitted officer of the court at the threshhold of the hallowed halls of justice.
"Won't you let me in too?"
Permission DENIED. Go find yourself a lawyer first.
"Young man, if I were you, I'd just sit here and admire the fabulous architecture."

That was the old Supreme Court. Now all the hearings and daily functions of the Supreme Court are carried out in the new Supreme Court. That's the one, looming like an alien mothership in the background behind the old building, a modern architectural marvel to dwarf all other marvels:
